A Large Statile Triplod ‘Lian’ with Cover

Tang Dynasty
d. 25 cm

Provenance
Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, before 1990
Lam’s Gallery, Hong Kong

The shape of ‘Lian’ can be found in Han Dynasty bronze and pottery. The shape regain its popularity in Tang and Song Dynasty, especially in Song Dynasty evidently endorsed by Emperor Huizong. A surviving ‘Lian’ of the Ru ware is now displayed in the Percival Foundation, room 90 of the British Museum, without cover.

Tang Dynasty ‘Lian’ of statile stone medium is extremely rare, the present ‘Lian’ comes with a finely carved cover, which is crucial in understanding the original design of Tang Dynasty, hence of great historical importance.
